Archives For Left-brain

Today I Decision-Making-Strategies-590x400write about a subject matter that truly fascinates me and that I desire to increase my skill sets and awareness in, the all important area of decision making, more specifically good decision making. We make decisions every day and numerous ones throughout the day. What and who do we depend on to help us make wise and good decisions? Are there tools/resources to assist us? Who and when to seek out counsel from others? Personally, I’ve made decisions using more of an intuitive approach and values based, right brain; other times I’ve made decisions with factual discussions and practical points, left brain. Today, I choose to base my decisions using the whole brain decision-making process.

In our complicated world with the myriad of interactions we are involved in, we make decisions hundreds of times every day and nothing affects our lives more than the ability to make the……right decisions! Decisions have the power to change our lives forever. Every day we encounter happy and prosperous people as well as unhappy and suffering people, all because of the decisions they have made.

A survey of the American Management Association determined that business people make the right decisions only 50% of the time – surely that is not the acceptable standard of performance! One way of ensuring a greater success rate is to understand and apply the key to successful decision making….the whole brain process!

Understanding your brain preferences is a wise place to start, then all role players need to understand their own brain preferences and those of the other members. This applies to parenting, relationships and nearly all areas of life.leftrightbrain

Specific to parenting, parents need to understand their own preferences and that of their child in order to assist their child in choosing the right school, sports, jobs etc. For example, my son & “daughter in love” (I refer to love over using law…I’m an R2 thinker, all about the love with me:), they areschoolbus in the process of choosing a school for their daughter. They have narrowed the selection down to two. Offering a listening ear, I recognize the whole brain being used in their decision making. Knowing my son’s (R1) & daughter in loves’ (L2) preferences, I understand where their processes and preferences are coming from. Yet, they both are aware of their daughter’s highest quadrant and seek to make their decision according to what is best for her….not only themselves (such as close proximity), but looking at the bigger picture and the best fit for her.

When seeking to make wise and good decisions a whole brain process has to be followed. Here lies the key to making good decisions in life, be it in business, relationships, education, etc., develop the processes of the whole brain and apply them is the way to make sound and better decisions.

Are You Game?!

Kristen Olynick —  November 19, 2013 — Leave a comment

Recently on face book I encountered a game.  I was totally unawares that it was a game.  I had just finished reading 12 things a friend wrote about herself that others may not have known.  I was actually blown away by how awesome she is.  My heart seemed to smile as I finished reading her 12 things and I felt I knew her just a wee bit more.

Just as I “Liked” her post and wrote “You are amazing” I received a post to my timeline from my amazing friend.  “Ok, so I guess the game goes like this, you like or comment on a status and you’re given a number to repeat the process. So, I give you 12 as well:)”

I have never played games on face book just because I usually don’t take the time…for such trivial things :)

Before I knew it, my creative juices began flowing and I was writing…thoughts poured from my memory bank and within 3 minutes I had my 12:

1) I love numbers!! Referring to their meaning not an accountant numbers person
2) While serving as my grad class President I got into a fist fight with the Secretary/Treasurer & was suspended
3) I had to wear the hand me down underwear of my older sister & let’s just say she wasn’t a size small
4) One New Years Eve in Mexico I had emergency surgery & was operated on, cut hip bone to hip bone without anesthetic….really wanted a whiskey bottle!
5) Always wanted 3 sons…..what was I thinking?!! Daughters are amazing!!
6) I may appear an extrovert (just because I love ppl & their stories) yet by nature am an intuitive introvert
7) Need 3 lifetimes to do all that I want to do….i’m addicted to change from the place of wanting to do new things…all the time!!
Met & married my guy in a 4 month window, been married 27.5 years….we also work together in biz & ministry
9) Freakishly afraid of mosquitos….specifically what they give you!
10) I am a recovering people pleaser.
11) My fight or flight reactors are almost always on: I once came upon a horrific brawl btwn 2 ginormous men…without a moments thought I jumped onto one guys back (all 108 lbs of me) & whispered into his ear “You don’t want to do this” And he stopped smashing the other guys face into a car bumper.
12) I am more afraid of success than failure….working on that

The responses and likes were quick to come in.  One thing I learned from this “game” is that we as human beings enjoy learning about ourselves and others….we enjoy stories.  I believe companies such as Starbucks have really tapped into this human desire of ours in the 21st century.

As I thought further about this game and games in general I recalled the famous quote of Albert Einstein “Games are the most elevated form of investigation.”game

Then I thought further and deeper…..we live in the Information Era….such a left-brain world it is!  With computer programming (programmed us right out of our right hemisphere that’s for sure) to our school, business and health systems, just about everything in our Western society is programmed for the processes of the left-brain.  Truly it is imperative to not only value the processes of our right hemisphere such as investigation, problem solving, empathy, holistic & big picture thinking, strategy, variety, networking, communication, intuition to name just a few but we need to utilize these valuable processes.

The times we live in are demanding these processes as our world and how we do business is changing. Could it be a simple shift is called for?  A shift from the left-brain (not forsaking it….it’s just not all sufficient, to the much needed, sought after, in high demand processes of our right brain.

Think about this…..there is a whole other world that we must integrate in order to meet the challenges of the next century…..and it’s just across the way :) Two Hemispheres

Are you predominantly a left-brain (analytical & factual) or right-brain (holistic & strategic ) processor?

Do you prefer organization & detail (left-brain) or interpersonal & unorthodox (right-brain)

Did you know that children laugh over 400 times a day!  Whereas, adults laugh a mere 15 times a day…..who’s more fun to hang out with!  I love children and playing with them is such a joy!  Their simplicity, adventure, curiosity, love, passion are so contagious, they just fill me up.  I’ve worked with children for over 2 decades and now as a grandma, living life with my grand kids I continue to be in awe of the joy that children are and bring!

The saying, “Laughter does good like a medicine” is not only a great declaration it is actually a true fact!  New research indicates that laughing with friends releases feel-good chemicals, which also relieves pain.  Until now, scientists haven’t proven that like exercise and other activities, laughing causes a release of endorphins.  For my upper left-hemisphere thinkers…researchers believe that the long series of exhalations that accompany true laughter cause physical exhaustion of the abdominal muscles and in turn, trigger endorphin release. From experience, I just know laughter makes me feel better!

imagination-mindmapAnother important trait of children is their vast and abundant imagination.  Children often use narratives or pretend play in order to exercise their imagination. The make-believe, out of the box, forming new images in the mind that have not been previously experienced, creativity and artistic expression assist the mind to be free from external limitations.  My 4 year old granddaughter Evah, is a right brain upper cerebral thinker.  She is artistic, expressive, unconventional, loves variety and using her imagination.  Recently, while playing together, we had lost a member of our “paper doll princess going to the ball” ensemble.  Evah said to me, “Mama, let’s close our eyes and use our imagination to show us where the doll is, cause it works!”  She closed her eyes tightly and visualized the missing princess piece. And find it we did!  The best part of Evah’s imagination, to me, is how much joy she receives.  photo-23You will often hear her laughing….out loud…to one of her made up jokes or silly stories she loves to tell.  Yes, they are “off the wall” with little logic to them, yet fill her heart and mine with great happiness and laughter!  And really, we should laugh until our belly hurts and then just a little bit more!

The popular song, “What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love” is absolutely true.  I just might add…..and huge doses of laughter!  We adults have a bit of catching up to do with our kids…..15 to 400!  With awareness of the extreme benefits that laughter does to our hearts and minds and to our immune systems, we should be practicing this “homemade trait” more often!  Today, sit down and play with a child, turn on a funny TV program, visit with a long time friend and share fond memories together. this-laughter Your body, soul and mind are longing for that deep full belly laugh….come on now….laugh out loud!

It was the summer of…….’83!  Yeah I know, the song refers to the summer of ’69 but I graduated high school in 1983!  I realized the other day that it was 30 years ago this June and just as our theme song said, “Only time will tell”……sandsoftimeFor me the importance is not who did what or who married who……..but rather who stayed true to themselves!  In the brilliant words of Dr. Seuss, ‘‘Today you are YOU that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than YOU.’  ….30 years ago, I reflect and remember this…….Dr__Seuss_Quote_by_pianoxlove112

I was appointed grad President that year and I took on the responsibilities with zeal & great zest!  I wanted it to be the best year, the best memories made, the best experiences possible for all, especially me!  If I had to endure another year of school and living in a small BC town, I was going all in!

It soon became evident that there were certain ‘ways’ that every grad class did things; from the ceremony, dinners, even fund raising was done ‘just so’  Being a strong minded and unconventional sort of person, I immediately set up a meeting with the school Principal.  To make a long story shorter… curious mind & longing to understand ‘why’ we had to do things the same way as every other year, was surprisingly met with great receptivity from the Principal, which even to this day I give a lot of credit to.  Instead of deeming me ‘rebellious, difficult, or demanding’, he saw me!  A person with a strong preference for ‘out of the box’ thinking, creativity, lets’ do things….. differently!  I would go on in life not receiving such ‘grace’ and receptivity from a few employers and mostly…….in the church as unfortunately Creativitycrayonmany are threatened when others think differently than they do or question why things are done the same way over and over again (remember the definition of insanity?  To do the same thing over again expecting different results….geesh!)   Back to my story…..

From the location of the ceremony (it had always been held in the school gym), can’t for the life of me understand why!  To fund raising (didn’t do the redhelicopterusual car washes & bake sales :)  To arriving for graduation (some were so creative they actually arrived in helicopters!)  All in all, it was a very creative, one of a kind graduation that was enjoyed by all. Once creativity is encouraged and routine and habit broken, everybody can be creative!

Knowing myself the way I do (and staying true to being me), as well as being a whole brain practitioner, I desire to assist pechildwonderople, all people, parents, employers, church leaders to name a few, to understand the importance of seeing the world around you, in all its wonder,  in a whole brain way…..this will lead to peace, prosperity of soul, deeper intimacy in relationships and needless to say, a better quality of life.

Don’t wait, don’t hesitate to understand your brain preferences……..only time will tell!

loveheartI recently had the privilege of sitting down with a dynamic couple!  Dynamic for many reasons really.  First, they have been married for 35 years!  They work together on a day to day basis, have 4 children & 2 grandchildren and have many similar interests and hobbies.  I am not suggesting life has been a bed of roses by any means.  But I did come to realize this one thing about them…..this one crucial key to their success…..creatingyourself

They have done the work!  And still choosing to do more!  They have invested in themselves and in their marriage throughout the years, creating the relationship and life they always dreamed of.  That’s right;  they simply discovered that, ‘Life isn’t about finding yourself.  Life is about creating yourself.’

Both have used a variety of profiling tools to assist in understanding themselves better.   With being business owners, they knew the way to success in all relationships including business, is to use tools that lead to understanding yourself and others, with the goal being peace & harmony…….and prosperity!

I was certainly excited to share my discoveries on both their brain profiles as I knew they would find value in what I would disclose to them.  It’s a1362979340_breaking-the-chainsmazing what our brain preferences reveal!  For some, it brings great clarity.  For others, shows how powerful they really are which leads to having greater purpose.  And still for others……it means leaving behind ‘voices’ of those who labeled you, boxed you in, misjudged and misunderstood you.  The “ah ha’s,” the light switch turning on, that which is revealed is worth……everything!  “Since doing my profile I feel like someone came and took ‘invisible chains’ off. Things that have been negatives are now positives, and the direction I want to go in is that much clearer.”

My hat goes off to this beautiful couple for staying the course, staying true to themselves, to each other, and for their humility, “If you already know everything, you will never learn anything.”

In all the profiling tools they have used and all the work they have done,  I was still anticipating the wonder they would experience during our consultation!  I knew there was more to be discovered!  The following is a post made by the husband:

“Ha, who knew? Turns out I am more RIGHT-BRAINED than LEFT-BRAINED?!?!?!

Though I have a “high preference” in the left cerebral part, dominated by “the analyst” – it is trumped by a “very very high preference for the right cerebral dominated by “the imagineer”

At the limbic level, again my right-brain “empathizer” is stronger than the left-brained preserver and even “the organizer”

“Seriously – I am surprised.”surprise

Do you like surprises!  Most people do…’s the little child in all of us!  Looking for the perfect Father’s Day gift?  Look no further!  He doesn’t need another tie, or even an ice cream cake (calories calories calories!)  Give him a gift that will help him create the life of his dreams……oh, and be certain it will bring him a delightful surprise!   CLICK HERE FOR PACKAGES STARTING AT $57
